- Is your door handle loose?
-
Depending on the type of lever door handle, you may be able to find the screws simply by looking at the faceplate on the door handle
-
If you have a lever door handle with no visible screws, then you will need to locate the detent access hole or pin which is typically found on the side of the door handle. It may be a small round or rectangle shaped hole or protruding pin. Check for a set screw on the bottom of the door handle that could be locking the handle in place. If there is a set screw, loosen and remove it with your screwdriver.
-
Loosen the screws so that you can inspect the thread and tip for any defects. If the screws are damaged, then you will need to replace the screws. Take the old screws with you to a Home Depot to ensure you can find the right size and length for your door handle

- If there are bugs getting in through the bottom of your door or your room isn’t well insulated, your weather stripping might need replacing
- Change your weather stripping to determine whether it needs replacing
- Pull the stripping off if it is attached with adhesive. You may need to use a knife or flat-head screwdriver to force it off
- If you see screws or nails, remove them using a claw hammer or reverse drill. If you see staples, use a flat-head screwdriver to remove them
- Take measurements for new stripping. Measure the width of the DOOR, not the width of the doorway. Add another 5-10% to factor in waste. Then measure the height of the gap
- Go to your local hardware store and purchase new stripping. Use felt or foam stripping if the door doesn’t get used frequently. Use rubber stripping or tubular vinyl if the door is used often as this material is more durable.
